The story

A procession carrying banners and trophies crosses the page under the heading Primus, the first of the triumphs that Poliphilo watches in his dream. The Hypnerotomachia Poliphili was printed by Aldus Manutius in Venice in 1499, and its woodcuts are set into the text so closely that picture and type read as one design. The copy is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Many have called it the most beautiful book of the fifteenth century.

  • If it arrives less than perfect, we reprint or refund — your choice.

Why our plates cost more than a poster: we print from the highest-resolution scans available, at sizes where the engraving itself becomes visible — the emblem line, the letterpress bite, the registration of colour — on stock made to outlive its owner.
