The story
A winged dragon coils on the forest floor, its long tail looping round in front of it. The verse above calls it a great marvel that the highest remedy lies in a venomous dragon. This is the sixth figure of the Book of Lambspring, engraved by Matthäus Merian and printed in the Musaeum Hermeticum, Frankfurt, 1678. The caption below explains the dragon as mercury, sublimed and returned to itself. Merian makes it handsome rather than frightening.
