The story
A stag and a unicorn stand face to face in a forest clearing. The verse tells the reader that both are hidden in the wood, and the caption explains: in the body are soul and spirit. It is the third figure of the Book of Lambspring, engraved by Matthäus Merian and printed in the Musaeum Hermeticum, Frankfurt, 1678. Look at the forest: Merian made his name engraving views of towns and country, and the trees here are as carefully made as the animals.
