The story

Two lions stand together in a clearing, one looking out at the reader. The verse calls it the greatest marvel, that out of two lions one is made, and the caption says spirit and soul must be joined and led back into their body. This is the fourth figure of the Book of Lambspring, engraved by Matthäus Merian and printed at Frankfurt in 1678 in the Musaeum Hermeticum. The lions are drawn with a heraldic dignity that lifts the whole page.
