The story

A great globe crossed by light and dark, ringed with the names of God's properties — one of the fold-out diagrams engraved for the works of Jacob Boehme, the shoemaker-mystic of Görlitz whose visions tried to map the whole inner architecture of the godhead. Boehme wrote in the early seventeenth century; these elaborate 'philosophick' plates were made for later editions of his works to hold his difficult system in the eye. Some had moving flaps a reader could lift. This one draws the war and reconciliation of light and dark that ran through all his thought. We hang it as a marvel of visionary diagramming — theology drawn as an engine of concentric wheels.
